Luxurious Limousine Accounting Error
A federal Conservative minister admitted that she had failed to disclose thousands of dollars in limousine rides, food, and hotel bills, due to an accounting error. Although International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda blamed "administrative errors" for her failure to disclose the expenses, the ‘errors’ only came to light when an opposition MP pointed them out in the House of Commons.
It is alleged that she carried out an elaborate spending spree and then tried to hide that spending from the public. According to invoices and receipts obtained under Access to Information requests, Oda had spent thousands of dollars on secret limo hire, flights, hotels and food while she was minister of Canadian heritage.
In one case, she racked up a $1,300 limousine bill in one day, when she had a limo pick her up at 8 a.m. at her home about 80 kilometres outside of Toronto, drive her to several events in downtown Toronto including a Conservative party event, and then drop her off back at her home at 11 p.m.
During question period, Oda would not answer questions put to her by opposition MPs about her expenses. One of the questions was why was she using limos in the first place?
